I’ve been lazily collecting issues of Paul Pope’s THB for a year or so now, meaning that I don’t really search them out or anything, but that I will happily buy anything I happen to find for a reasonable price. Giant THB 1.v.2, pictured above, was the first issue I bought. Anyways, I think First Second is going to collect THB soon, which is definitely good news. It’s a shame that the large issues (like Giant THB!) will probably have to be shrunken down if everything really is being collected in one volume. As nice as it will be to have such easy access to this great story in one piece, though, THB as it currently exists (i.e. separate, confusingly numbered, increasingly hard to find pamplets) is kind of a great thing. The alternative comic book is such a unique art object, and a dying one as well, and for a while there Pope was one of the best practitioners of this form. I actually think that his Vertigo series (Heavy Liquid, 100% and we might as well count Batman Year 100 too) read best in their original serialized form, and I kind of worry that might be the case with THB as well.
