“One of the parts of my dissertation is about this type of character and/or author whom I call an “art-sadist,” which is somebody who, as a result of being completely narcissistically involved, creates a really beautiful work of art. Sort of unintentionally beautiful to others, because of their narcissism. It’s something that’s completely – I don’t want to say self-serving – but when your personal delusion can become this shareable, beautiful aesthetic object. I think it’s a really interesting process and I think it has to do with that modulating between self-sacrifice and complete self-indulgence. That’s what I think is really neat about that whole creative process. It’s very self-sacrificing and giving, but it appears selfish or misanthropic.”
