“Drifting”

Made for Comics Workbook

This page demonstrates familiar White themes (self searching implied in looking at hand, ending with the “conclusion” of ambiguity over analysis; potentially it’s even non-sequential!), but is notable as a very clear little story contained in one page.  So much detail is able to be inferred out of so little.

The light blue is effective and integral for mood, creating a light melancholy.  But what is most notable is the sense of place suggested in the single panel of the house.  There is no mooring of where that house is in relation to the character, but we assume in the next panel the character is looking at it.  And this little bit of specificity gives the whole comic more authenticity and heft, as this is no longer a character who is just a symbol or metaphor.  This character is in a relationship with the world around them.  If the comic were longer the house would not suffice, the character would return to being a simplistic symbol.  It’s the implicit mind of the character that is being explored, and the implication needs context to inform it and give it depth.
