This Is Not a Novel, David Markson (reread) – Reread because a collection of Markson’s final three novel was finally issued — he expressed hope this would happen in an interview, I believe — although I don’t understand why Reader’s Block was excluded. Maybe a rights issue or something?

Vanishing Point, David Markson (reread) – I’ve become more interested in rereading books over the last several years, because I enjoy how my feelings about them change over time. Markson’s novels were very important to me at one time, and I still like them a lot, but some of their flaws were more evident on this read. In particular, the biases in Markson’s selection of facts and personalities (relatively few women, a decidedly strange set of facts about Arabs and Islam) were more apparent. Maybe that’s a function of reading so much of his work in a fairly short period? Or a reflection of how my perspective has changed? It would be ironic if this collected edition led me to decide the books work better as discrete units.
