Yearly 2019

I thought I’d talk a bit about the new comic I’ve published and which you can buy here. It’s over 100 pages and full color.

This is the second issue of the annual series that I hope to publish forever. I wrote last year about the premise of this project. This year’s issue is similar in format and approach to last year – one long story and a number of short strips. I also tried to play with or subvert some of the ideas presented in Yearly 2018. Also like last year, I decided to sequence those stories carefully, thinking about theme and flow in hopes of creating a pleasant reading experience. In the future it might be interesting to present the work in exactly the order that I finished it.

I pushed myself this year to edit my work carefully, and not let myself make compromises. I redrew many of these pages. I let work sit for months then came back to it. There’s a tension between revising endlessly and holding myself to a rigorous standard, but I think I ended on the right side of that balance. The comic is done and printed, after all.

Two years in, I can say that this has been a very helpful construct for my work. It helps me think about each comic I make as part of a larger project rather than a stand-alone piece. It sets a tangible goal and deadline that I enjoy working towards. If you read the comic, I hope you like it.
